The beginning of everything
According to scholars and experts, the idea of blasting came through a grain of sand.
In fact, it is a very curious story. It all started when American soldier and inventor Benjamin Chew Tilghman (Filadelfia, 1821-1901) observed sand marks on his window pane after a storm.
Thus, he thought of creating the process to engrave marble or granite headstones. In 1862, the process evolved and the sandblasting started to solve problems of adhesion of protection paints and cleaning of encrustation during the American civil war in the first battleships (Monitor vs. Merrimack, used in the Battle of Hampton Road, in 1862) .
Blasting consists of moving particles at high speed, causing their impact on a surface.
The initial objective was to remove paint, rust (oxidation) and contaminating materials. But, the method also proved its efficiency in clearing and cleaning machines and buildings.
The first patent was known and listed in 1870 (US patent 108,408.), In the United States and, since then, the basis for the creation of hydrojetting has been created.
Today, blasting is found more frequently in the industrial sector and has started to be carried out in other ways, such as through hydrojetting, which uses water exclusively to obtain the desired cleaning results.
In addition, it is important to note that hydrojetting offers many advantages in its use. It is agile, efficient and does its job without causing damage or changes in the application site.
Without the use of abrasives and chemicals, hydrojetting is a safe way to clean different machines, pipes and prepare surfaces.
History of the high pressure pump
The creation of the first high pressure pump, the main component of hydrojetting equipment, was inspired by the needs of agriculture. The first records come from irrigation. The Egyptians initially transported water in clay pots. But, around 2.000 BC, the first water-lifting machine was built by pitchers tied to a rope. Then came the windlass, the daughter-in-law and the Persian wheel.
However, all of these machines were powered by human or animal labor.
The first alternative pump was invented around 250 BC and operated through a water wheel in Greece and ancient Rome.
At the beginning of the 60th century, in Europe, the first water pumping machines with higher pressures (up to XNUMX bar) began to appear. But, the flow was not constant.
Since then, a lot has changed until the pumps arrived at the models and functions we know today.
Differences between abrasive blasting and hydrojettingo
As we have already told you throughout the text, hydrojetting emerged from an abrasive blasting process, more commonly known as sandblasting.
However, there are some differences between the two processes. Check out what distinguishes each method below!
Firstly, abrasive blasting is a procedure normally used in structures made of iron, steel and other metals, to remove rust, old paint and lamination scale, and to open the anchoring profile.
Likewise, the method is also used to create roughness in granites, marbles and other stones, and for general cleaning of concrete and facades.
Thus, the service is efficient in removing the layer of oxides and other substances, through the use of abrasives designed with high pressure compressed air (60 bar).
The abrasive blasting process uses substances such as copper slag and steel grit and, therefore, it has disadvantages such as the suspension of particles in the air, which can cause damage to the environment and contamination of the seabed. And yet, it requires health care from operators.
At the end of the abrasive blasting application, it is necessary to wash the surfaces with high pressure equipment to remove salts and other contaminants that may have penetrated the profile (anchoring / roughness) of the surface.
In the case of hydrojetting, it complies with several new environmental laws and standards, for example, ISO 14000, BS 8000 and ISM CODE. This process uses only water without any solid or chemical elements.
Therefore, the main differences between the two procedures are in the material used and in its relationship with the environment and the operator.
Thus, this alternative is favorable for those who will handle the equipment, as it does not offer risks and exposures to chemical materials.
Likewise, the work, which is normally carried out at high pressure, does not damage equipment and surfaces, as it only removes layers of paint and unwanted materials.
Therefore, hydrojetting is a process widely used for cleaning, surface preparation and for removing dirt on machines, equipment, structures and pipes.
